For the fourth DRON Festival Sunday session, Cambridge based writer and musician David Grundy presents an informal talk and discussion on ‘The Knowledge in Motion of Beings’: Collective Improvisation as Embodiment. David edits and writes for Eartrip magazine and runs the wonderful Woe Betide Records label.

During the afternoon Hundred Years Gallery will converge with the PigPen Club at the beginning of a special club night in honour of Gabriel Hardisty-Miller, an inspirational campaigner for the rights of autistic people, who sadly passed away last year aged 25.
A PigPen clubnight to celebrate Gabriel’s life and his achievements will be held at The Macbeth
in Hoxton Street from 4pm to late, and we invite the audience and
participants to join the procession from Hundred Years Gallery to The
Macbeth at 4.45.
Admission to The Macbeth event is £7 / £5 concessions. All proceeds go to the National Autistic Society.

An anagrammatic, name-shifting, all-electronic improvising of MARTIN HACKETT, synthesizer, DAVID
GRUNDY, laptop & STUART CHALMERS, tapes. As MYRTLE & THE
CHUCKRAGS // THE CRACKLY HARD NUTMEGS// RAMSHACKLE DUTCH GENTRY // ETC,
the group has performed at Red Square’s outdoor improv festival in
Cropredy, and in Oxford, Cambridge and Cheltenham. HACKETT has played in the band CERTAIN ANTS,
whose scant recorded legacy, an elusive cassette release, belies their
excitingly varied approach; after a period in France, where he was and
still is involved in numerous musical approaches, he now resides in
England and is an active member of the OXFORD IMPROVISERS. Notable
collaborators include ADAM BOHMAN, PAT THOMAS and PHIL WASCHMANN. GRUNDY
plays around the UK with various collectives and groupings, and is a student at the University of
Cambridge. CHALMERS plays electronics – currently, manipulated tapes –
and has numerous self-released albums to his name, or to that of his
alter-egos, SKARABEE & tusK.
Together their music is cut-up,
sampled, sliced, randomisation and control jerking apart or together in
some kind of EVOLVING IMPROVISED FORM.

STASIS 73 / MONSTER ZERO - Saturday 23rd February
Stasis 73 : Formed
in 2009 by a collective of creatives from Hastings. Film makers,
painters, poets and musicians. The aim of the project is to move beyond
the concerns of more traditional music making, yet not fall into the
trap of being labelled experimental.
Here they present an immersive live sound and film installation consisting of drones and sonic explorations, utilizing electro-acoustic manipulated pure noise, voice, text, whisperings, field recordings & darkness, creating an atmosphere that is simultaneously oppressive, uplifting, nostalgic and intriguing, using refracted collected filmed & found images, projected and refilmed, creating a multi-layered textural imagery, complementary to the sound layers: spoken and text sound, found object sounds, acoustic sounds, acoustic sound exploration and processed acoustic sounds, decay, and extended drones.

JERICO ORCHESTRA / WIL MILES - Saturday 23rd February
For the DRON Festival, the Jerico Orchestra will collaborate with digital artist Andor Merks and his Composition Robotics.
Using projected images as an interactive graphic score this first time meeting promises a trip into uncharted areas, as visuals by Pete Jones are fed into the digital mixer ... the collective mind of the orchestra in action, the projected score, and the response of the audience together create a unique work which must be experienced in its totality. This performance for DRON Festival also incorporates strategies for group improvisation devised by Michael Walter. Guest musicians include mezzo-soprano Sarah Wheeler.
Digital 3D graphics meet table scraping, analog improvisation with found objects, electronics, noises from the museum of musical savagery, sacred geometry, strings, horns and motors, bits of old radios, the brutality of fashionable London clashing head-on with Olivier Messiaen and Sun Ra. No powdered wigs, no chocolate box alpine landscapes.

DRON TALK SESSION III with Cello by GD Painting
An informal talk and discussion session in the Gallery Cafe hosted by
artists involved in the Dron project, with solo cello improvisations by
Grahame (GD) Painting.

Join us to talk about any and every aspect of experimental music and art, with Andor Merks, Grassy Noel, Jill Rock and others (TBC).
Grahame Painting plays cello with Jerico Orchestra and guitar in the cosmic industrial jazz sextet Horseless Headmen, which he leads, and with the jazz and blues singer Bee Ororo's band; he also plays various instruments and sings backing vocals with Family Fodder. He has played with many leading instrumentalists on the London improv scene and performed with artists and projects as diverse as Flow Motion, Baby Fox, Lena Fiagbe, Rhys Chatham, Atlantic Soul Machine, Maxi Jazz, Daryl Hall and the BBC Newsnight programme.

occupying Hundred Years Gallery for a continulous six hour process of
music, dance and live art. Personnel on this occassion are Johanna

The Bristol Brighton and Cheltenham Improviser's Zariba was instigated by Mark Anthony Whiteford aka M.A. Yfor?
It was
set up in order to explore free improvisation away from the confines and
defining limitations of the typical us/european performance straight
jacket in which a number of people arrive in a performance space, play a
'piece' which will possibly/probably have nothing to do with how these
people feel or what they are thinking. At the end the audience will
clap. Or, in most instances, the audience will clap when things go quiet
and that will be the end of the 'piece.' People will then go to the bar
and behave pretty much as though nothing just happened and the
performers will be left to pack up and carry on as though nothing just
happened. And maybe, very often, nothing did happen. Another thing I
always found strange was the way musicians would never speak to each
other during a piece, or if they did so they'd whisper as though
speaking to each other wasn't supposed to happen.
I also
hated playing in horrid venues and hanging around for hours on end and
playing on stages where I couldn't hear the music properly and where I
felt the horrendous pressure of giving people something that they ?
[wanted? understood?]
So
Zariba was set up for people to come and explore whatever might happen
for them in a given space. We try to find nice place to play with
heating and a kitchen and nice floors and window with views. Once we
enter this space we are improvising. We move things about. Speak to each
other. Dance make sounds. Make tea. Eat biscuits. Write. Paint. And I
tend to speak about what's on my mind along with all of the above. We
respond to the venue we're in, firstly by enjoying it, and secondly by
incorporating the things that are in the venue. We like village halls
and old-fashioned places with proper old kitchens and proper old tea
pots.For some of us memories are stored in such buildings, for others
it's a glimpse into the memory of the other or a view onto a plane glass
window of now. We often use a lovely old Girl Guide Hut in Bristol, or
Brighton Zariba has met in Rottingdean village hall and a tabernacle out
in the countryside. Sometimes we play outdoors. We let come up what
might come up. People come and go. Some stay for the whole duration
[usually 3 hours] some just a short while. One of our member is a very
ill person so she comes at the end and we all try to be quiet when she
plays because her strength is not always great. We try to be as we
really are. We explore surface spaces within the environment alongside
deep spaces within our memory/psyche. We explore one another and with
another. It's an improvisation on what is I guess maybe, possibly.
Nothing much happens. Nothing major. Just life. We pack away and we take
the story of another process on into the process of life.
We
usually play in the daytime. I don't like to be out at night, and least
of all in music venues; they tend to be a bit noisy and boring for huge
chunks of the evening I feel.

The inimitable Adam Bohman returns with another set of text based spoken-word cut-ups - a DIY Dadaist in the midst of suburban banality, relishing the surrealities of recipies for brain and sweetbreads, menus describing authentic borscht and signs on defunct shops.

Agnes Hay is a British/Hungarian artist working with video, experimental animation, graphic art, illustration, stage design etc. Showing here from her 'Meditative Wildlife Videos', a series of one hour, unedited single
shots of wildlife, mostly in urban environments. Instead of humanizing
the animal world these videos try to do the opposite. By focusing on, and
moving with animals the human remains in the background, no
sensationalism, nothing is rare or special, just the music of existence.
She has shown these videos with improvised music at the Gathering free improv. group's events.

DRON TALK SESSION II with Piano by Gabriel Keen - Sunday 10th February, 3 to 5 pm.
Gabriel Keen performs early 20th Century classical pieces and improvisations at the piano, and an informal talk session with Robert Robertson, author of ‘Eisenstein on the Audiovisual: The Montage of Music, Image and Sound in Cinema’, poet and performer Noel Macken (AKA Grassy Noel) and Roy Osborne, artist
and educator and authority on colour theory in art and design and on
books about colour. He first published ‘Lights and Pigments’ in 1980 and
‘Color Influencing Form’ in 2004.

DRON PERFORMANCE NIGHT - Saturday 9th February
A night of poetry, performance, critical polemic and experimental soundscapes. From 6.30pm.
Adnan al-Sayegh (born 1955 in Al-Kufa, Iraq), is one of the most original voices from the generation of Iraqi poets known as the Eighties Movement. His poetry, crafted with elegance, and sharp as an arrowhead, carries an intense passion for freedom love and beauty. Adnan uses his words as a weapon to denounce the devastation of war and the horrors of dictatorship. For the Dron Festival he performs 'Mirrors' in collaboration with Dron artist Jill Rock.
Cos Chapman (electronic soundscapes) began his working life as an Oceanographer. Throughout this time he experimented extensively with sound, using modified reel-to-reel and self-built devices; after 12 years he went to Lancaster University to study Music, Technology and Theatre. While there he began to pursue his interest in cross art-form collaborations and soundtracks.
Douglas Park, U.K based and internationally active visual artist, author (of literary prose and critical essays), as well as exhibition curator (and increasingly all practices combined), delivers a monologue from inside the Dron.
Jaime Valtierra‘s work covers the use of different media, from traditional techniques in painting, drawing and etching, to performance, digital media and installation art. His practice is that of an evolving method which generates links between conventional art practice, computer generated graphics and installation art.

Stephen Micalef : After years of putting on The Brixton Poet (a regular poetry event at different squatted venues round Brixton, including the Lido once!) Micalef is now mainly concerned with making sure every important William Blake date is marked with an explosion of performances at an appropriate place. Stephen Micalef - Zine Legend, Poet Laureate and Lord Mayor in waiting chucks us some poetry.
